Why We Don’t Have a National Health System for All and Instead Have a System Designed to Make Maximum Profits for Oligarchs and Blackmail Employees
The short answer is because we are America.
Another short answer is that our democracy is very anemic, artificial and easily curtailed by influential parties that may not have the same interests as the electorate.
Another answer is because we have been trained to fear socialism by John Dulles and the Presidents that he was independent of, Andrew McCarthy and the many officials and citizens that were influenced by that era. Don’t forget Ronald Reagan, his larger than life movie and TV star presence and the eager and patriotic public that reciprocated with a lot of affinity. And the Reagan years being the period that launched the neoliberal age which has been more than accommodating for these closed minded and extremist economic ideologies.
But more importantly, the corporate monopoly state has always controlled mass communication. There is a very efficient system for delivering this kind of propaganda and it is called the TV. Also radio and newsprint, but TV most of all starting in the forties and growing from one in every house to more than one in every house.
Then cable came along with 100 channels. Sure not every channel is teaching us to fear socialism, but absolutely none are allowed to have a different viewpoint. This is our spoon fed discourse.
Now of course we have digital media and every human decision made with the clicker is recorded into metadata that is constantly combed through with thousands of algorithms to make us more “understood” and more profitable using a whole new kind of behavioral science.
Why fear socialism? Is there a logical reason to fear socialism? Was there ever a logical reason to fear socialism? This is where it starts to get interesting. It all depends on who you are, what your interests are and why you believe what you believe.
For most of us, everything we have learned about the “free market”, all the propaganda for the efficiency of the private markets, coupled with stories about the evils of socialism has been tailor made (as if in a lab) by those that essentially own mainstream media, an unusually huge share of all corporate wealth including the mostly private military industrial complex, and the big tech security state. And the term corporate wealth includes all of the monopoly wealth that is concentrated at the very top of the society in only a few hands.
And anti-socialism propaganda campaigns targeted at younger people are still being ran online non-stop. Why? Someone really doesn’t want these young people to think for themselves. Why? A lot of reasons, but mainly because the interested parties do not want their media tools to go to waste. They know the media, Youtube included is a tool to be used. It is like a hammer. Instead of open forum and open minded curiosity they would prefer obedience and political docility. This anti-socialism propaganda is to put a bug in their brain so they are less likely to support a candidate that is for single payer.
It can start to hurt your brain trying to imagine all of the undemocratic government puppetry. For instance the financial market regulation, including health insurance, and all of the foreign economies, governments, and societies that the US government is tasked with destroying, occupying, or crippling in the service of elite ownership in the western world. This is the free market folks. That’s American freedom.
Did you really think the US government was using its military to stop terrorism? to protect human rights? to protect democracy? A lot of us did, don’t feel stupid. But it doesn’t take much looking to find that the US not only doesn’t lift a finger for these things but it is the most fair weather fan imaginable. The US is a big empire and big empires do what they need to to get to their goal. When they are essentially a huge empire ran by global corporate/finance monopolies often the goal is about crippling other economies and other societies that do not kowtow to the US neoliberal system.
This same elite ownership class also has the most to lose from reducing emissions, improving sustainability and the changes this involves. To what degree Presidents are actually independent to act as they believe appropriate in addressing the problem of the physical environment is a big question.
This is why we have Generals and CIA agents working as commentators on the neoliberal news-o-tainment shows. These are the good guys that protect us and keep us save?
This society, this consumer culture, our spoon fed myths and our liberal market doctrines that we are told make sense make up a kind of ideological religious dogma. It gives us a kind of ten commandments of why socialism is bad and why the free market is good and that the US government cannot provide more than minimal social welfare and services because to do so is to commit a sin against the free market i.e. oligarchs, owner/investors, Wall St. and monopolies.
So, this kind of economic elite who largely control markets and control the vast majority of the government have a serious grip on our democracy and are continuing to choke the life out of it. This is why we don’t have a National Health System for all and instead have a system designed to make profits for oligarchs and to blackmail employees and workers of all kinds, including mothers.
Have you ever wondered why national politics is so crazy? How can it be that the most important decisions made on the whole nation’s behalf are turned into an embarrassing circus of nonsense and gas lighting, doublethink and double talk, crimes against logic, against common sense and against any sense of civility or good will? It’s because they are not really acting on the whole nation’s behalf, they are only acting on a very very small tiny itty bitty super elite society of owners, oligarchs, investors that give orders and “suggestions” over expensive wine and hors d’oeuvres. Sure there are people enjoying wine and hors d’oeuvres in every town and some of them might even be college kids who are being sophisticated, but the dinner parties I’m talking about are the really really elite ones.
These political actors, whether politicians, staffers or technocrats working for powerful politicians or agencies of government know how they got there. They may not think of what they do as working in the service of the CIA, or the MIC, Wall St, or the ownership class in general, but many do. One thing they know for sure is where they get their bread buttered and when bread buttering season rolls around next.
They also know what they can’t say. Some of the things they can’t say are: socialism, Palestine, Assange, fascist coup for example. There are many many more things, speaking honestly about sanctions for instance.
This power that controls markets and has major influence on the overall economy is kind of firewalled off. It is an undemocratic financial state which is firewalled off from democracy and from effective government regulation due to the rent seeking capture, corruption, and the superficial, almost fictional kind of politics we are used to but still play along with because as far as we know this is democracy right?
So I started with the short but insufficient answer to why we don’t have it and the true reason is actually pretty complicated in my informal survey. And it may actually be less about socialism being inherently bad or a sin but more about being subservient to a system that is all we know which involves a lot of elite worship, power worship, the neoliberal image of “success”, technocrat worship, tech billionaire worship, and celebrity worship.
All this kind of stuff, plus a police state, a white supremacist state, a video game state, a violence state that all contribute to frustrated and mentally ill boys senselessly killing scores of peaceful people. This is the “normal” that Biden was talking about.
If you had a fair account of the killing, death, and destruction of capitalism as compared to socialism it would be pretty ugly on both sides, but remember Nazi Germany called itself a socialist party but was essentially fascist capitalism. And some would point out the way Wall street banks and global corporations are bailed out and subsidized by the US treasury and central bank makes elite owners in the US the recipients of the most generous social safety net in the universe. The socialist Pol Pot who presided over mass killings similar to Nazi Germany was given military aid and support from the US, so who was the worse actor in that situation?
And the press agents of capitalism like to highlight only the good accomplishments of capitalism like cars, computers, super balls, calculators, electric toys, the space shuttle, electric windows, vhs tapes, sci-fi movies, yuppies, plastics and rubber, fast food, the mullet hairstyle, preppies, Michael Jackson, Benetton sweaters, the Gap. You know, American greatness.
But capitalism includes colonialism, genocide and the centuries long inhumane enslavement of human beings by owners and investors. The US is fully engaged in organized genocide right now as well as a totally inhumane and disgraceful apartheid state in Palestine by the US and its friend and kindred spirit Israel. King Leopold, a prominent capitalist and colonialist of the Congo in Africa, responsible for all kinds of mass murder. That’s the free market folks. Was he voted out? No, he was a King of Belgium. He was richly rewarded for his entrepreneurship and his industriousness in extracting the resources and labor from the Congo. I’m guessing he had a pretty good PR team back home.
We luckily had a civil war to defeat institutionalized slavery but we still are indoctrinated to serve and worship “free market” exploitation. And it does sound good right? “Free” Anything free should be good, but it’s not free of course. Free for the owners does not amount to freedom, it’s just freedom to exploit and monopolize.
People have done these kinds of death toll accountings and it kind of comes down to the same issue I mentioned at the top. That of indoctrination by propaganda. It’s usually horrible governments with unchecked power that cause death and destruction with impunity and in today’s world the US seems to be taking home the blue ribbon year after year and decade after decade. Most of it happens on different continents and believe it or not, it is not accurately reported. A lot also happens on this continent, the current death toll of the covid virus being a result of capitalism appears to be obvious.
Remember the words of our Secretary of State Albright regarding sanctions on Iraq? “500,000 dead Iraqi children from US sanctions is worth it”. I think the US State Dept. does not announce how many children they are killing on purpose at the behest of American corporate/financial interests anymore, but they’re still doing it.
The deep state, the corporate monopoly state, the oligarchy, the elite investor class, Wall St. This is what is trumping democracy and has been for a long time. This is what will keep a Bernie Sanders from winning a nomination or the Presidency. And if by some aberration the weapon of mass media is not able to stop a progressive, or false charges of sexual assault, corruption or anti-Semitism are not enough to stop them and they make it to the oval office, they would still have to face off with the deep state and the weapon of mass media every single day. This is why we have such a sick and toxic media. It’s a sick immoral machine with lots of big smiles, lots of pretentiousness and limitless amounts of hostility and belligerence towards the class struggle of average folks, employees, and working people.
